Hard Out Here - Is It What We Really Need?

You know me - I love anything that is body image positive, especially those people who use arts, music, poems etc to get their message across.

I have to admit that I heard about Lily Allens song long before I actually listened to it. With people quoting it's lyrics on Twitter and shouting about how great it was that Lily Allen had waxed lyrical about an issue that is so close to our hearts.

I read the lyrics and really loved what I read:

"If I tell you about my sex life

You call me a slut
Them boys be talking about their bitches
No one's making a fuss"

"You're not a size six

And you're not good looking
Well, you better be rich
Or be real good at cooking
You should probably lose some weight
'Cause we can't see your bones
You should probably fix your face
Or you'll end up on your own
Don't you want to have somebody who objectifies you?
Have you thought about your bar who's gonna tear it in two?
We've never had it so good, uh huh
We're out of the woods
And if you can't detect the sarcasm
You've misunderstood"

I listened to the song and I have to confess to liking it - catchy melody and lyrics I can relate to, what more does a song need?

And then I read a tweet from Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus

And she linked to this newspaper article from a few years ago

Now, I guess you could say that if Lily Allen thought she did look fat, then comparing it to someone else could be a good way of getting her point across... But then is dragging another female into a story about your own negative body image really a good step to take?

I have had a little play on Google and have also come across an open letter Lily Allen penned to Cheryl Cole a few years ago.

"Cheryl, if you're reading this, I may not be as pretty as you, but at least I write and sing my own songs without the aid of Auto-Tune," she said. "I must say, taking your clothes off, doing sexy dancing and marrying a rich footballer must be very gratifying, your mother must be so proud, stupid bitch."

Cheryl posted back saying "I have had enough of her and her big mouth," she said. "Over the last few months she has called [Girls Aloud bandmate Nicola Roberts] ugly, which I bit my tongue over. She called [other bandmate Sarah Harding] vile and my husband horrendous, but seems to have conveniently forgotten all of that."

So it seems that Lily perhaps hasn't always been as kind as she could have been... Since then she is said to have made peace with Cheryl, saying

So.. is it OK to be calling other females ugly and then a few years later releasing a song about image and 'setting the bar' of what you should look like? I say, yes. After all, we're all entitled to change and we all grow as people. If she has embraced beauty and can now write about issues such as "You should probably lose some weight, cause we can't see your bones" then good for her!

I really love that Lily Allen has recorded a song about body image and her take on the music industry, I just hope it is for all the right reasons! I love positive body image and I wish more people in the public eye would speak up about it and tell people it is OK to have a body, whatever size that is, that doesn't fit the media norm...I just hope that it's a permanent change in her outlook and we won't be reading negative stories from her in the future

What do you think?

ABC of Winter Warmers from Simply Be

BRRRRRR!!! How is it THIS cold already!?

I'll admit it - I am not a winter person! I don't like wearing lots of layers, I own one coat and I don't enjoy going out in the cold, dark, miserable evenings! Give me leggings, a dress and flip flops any day!

That said - we're in the middle of winter and there is no avoiding it! There are some really love winter jumpers on offer this season, so I thought I would take a look at some of the ones on offer from Simply Be this year!

Affordable -
Chunky Knit Heart Jumper

Available in mint and white (as pictured) or mint and grey I think that this bargain is great for just £21.00. When it comes to jumpers I personally don't like them massive and chunky, because I don't like being too hot and sweaty. What I think is nice about this jumper is that it is nice and warm thanks to the chunky knit but it doesn't look like it would be too big and bulky to wear. You can get this jumper here.

Bargain - Stripe Open Knit Tunic Jumper

I know, I know - back away from the stripes!! This jumper breaks the fashion rules when it comes to what plus size should wear, but maybe that is why I love it so much! I love a tunic jumper because they're nice and long, so you can easily team them up with leggings (and boots!). I think that this jumper has a nice shape to it, the only problem is that I think I would have to buy both colours - nightmare! You can get this jumper here.

Cash To Splash -
Grazia Soft Fluffy Knitted Metallic Yarn Jumper

As I am sure you all know by now, I can not resist a bit of sparkle. I love this jumper because it looks nice and cosy, but it still has some glitz and glamour about it! If you were wearing this to work and suddenly decided to go out for drinks afterwards, you would not feel at all under dresses in a jumper like this! For just £40.00 I think it would be a great addition to a wardrobe. You can get this jumper here

What do you like to wear to keep warm in winter?

Definition Of Size - Art Fundraiser

I have only been blogging properly for a very short time, but I am still very lucky that it has introduced me to some great people in the plus size world and fashion industry.

A couple of months ago I bumped into Anita Bellamy - a lovely lady who works as a 'fit model' for a number of plus size clothing ranges. Since then I have seen her at a few events - she is most definitely a supporter of this whole world, thing, community, industry...

Anita runs Plus Confidence In You, who buy their own definition are fighting for a fairer world. As their website says "We are here to promote and celebrate women and men of size We have been campaigning for for a few years now against body image discrimination and how society treats people of size. We are human and we come in all shapes and sizes and are no longer going to try and be accepted or fit in with how people feel we should look."

They have their first ever fundraiser at the end of this month and it sounds prettty exciting! I know I shall be attending, would be great to see some of your lovely faces there!

You can get tickets here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/org/4957159907 or find Anita on Twitter at https://twitter.com/PlusConfidence if you have any questions.

If anyone is going let me know... and come say hey!

Lady in Red

I have had this red dress from ASOS Curve in my wardrobe for a while, but haven't had a chance to wear it. This weekend I decided to be a lady in red for the Plus London After Dark Party and then my trip to BGP in the evening. I wore it with leggings (surpisingly I know!) and some sparkly silver shoes. I loved the fit of the top and enjoyed wearing it.

The 'lovely' necklace gets SO many comments, it's a Primark bargain and I am so glad I picked up it when I saw it a few months ago!

I don't often wear red, so it was a nice change for me - what colour do you like to wear?

Plus London - What I Wore

As you will probably have seen - I attended Plus London, a London based bloggers/plus size event last weekend. Leading up to the event I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to wear - I knew I would be out and about all day, so I wanted to make sure I was comfortable as well as looked good... After all, with so many fabulous plus size bloggers in attendance I couldn't be left behind in the style stakes!

In the end I opted for my green ASOS wrap around top, leggings and my trusty flats from Primark.

The backdrop is the back of the Hoxton Arches gallery where Plus London was held - how amazing does it look?

I had some professional photos taken on the day so I'll get those posted soon too!

Did you attend Plus London? I lusted after SO many outfits on the day, so please send me links so I can lust some more!

Plus London - My First Proper Bloggers Event!

Last weekend I attended my first proper bloggers event - Plus London. I had heard good things about previous events and after missing out on Plus North I was really keen to attend. I have to say, the day did not disappoint. In fact I spent so much time having fun that I forgot to take too many photos - sorry!

My day started with an amazing make over by the lovely Betty Pamper - I love looking at Bettys make up style and reading her blog, so having my make up done by her was a really treat and got my day off to an amazing start!

And the finished result (which lasted right through the Plus London After Dark Party and another event until bed time at 5am!)

Throughout the day we got to chat to the PR representatives from different larger companies (Simply Be, Taking Shape and Curvissa for example) and chat to people who started up some of the smaller companies we all know and love (Twisted Siren and Black Heart Creatives)... I was also introduced to a couple of companies I hadn't come across before which was great!

We got to have our photo taken by a professional photographer (Photos coming soon!) and listen to talks by some of the brands about their loves, future plans and what they're going to be doing for us - and of course ask any questions that we might have!

The day part of the event was finished with a fantastic performance by The Diablo Daniels - who was amazing!
Then we all headed off for a few hours, before coming back for the After Dark part of the event  - with some, interesting shots on offer by the Plus London Team! We got to take fun photos with a variety of props, have a chat to everyone and have a bit of a dance - so much fun!

Apart from a couple of launches, I haven't really attended a 'proper' blogger event and I am glad I did - It was so nice to meet the people behind the blogs I read and chat to the brands properly.

Thanks to the whole Plus London team for a marvellous Saturday!

Did you attend? Send me your write up links, I'd love to read them!

ABC Of Red Coloured Winter Dresses From Evans

As plus size retailers go, Evans have probably been around the longest! This means that they have seen more Christmas seasons come and go than some of their plus size competitors. This is great news because it means that can use their experience to put together fantastic winter wardrobe options - and for 2013 they have not disappointed.

Affordable - Evans Red Skater Dress

I love a skater dress and this one caught my eye because of the brightness of the colour. I love big, bold items of clothing and I think for less than £30.00 this is a great choice. I can see this skater dress put together with some nice bold jewellery and a big, sparkly belt to break up the colour a bit and give it a bit of glamour. You can buy this dress here

Bargain - Scarlett & Jo Red Lace Yoke Tunic

I have yet to add anything by Scarlett & Jo to my own wardrobe, but so far I have only ever heard good things about them! I like the colour of this tunic but I also like the lace shoulder and sleeve as I think it gives the dress a lovely look about it. You could easily wear this to work and then out to after work Christmas drinks without feeling like you weren't dressed up enough - a bargain for £35.00. You can get this dress here.

Cash To Splash - Scarlett & Jo Raspberry Red Powerfit Dress

When the powerfit dresses were launched people didn't stop raving about them - in fact they proved so popular that Scarlett & Jo alongside Evans bought out the dresses in a whole range of new colours and patterns. As you know, I am a sucker for a bit of colour so these new dresses were right up my street! I haven't had the money to splash out on one of these yet, but they are most definitely on my 'must have' list. This red dress is lovely and I can really see it being worn to a Christmas party. It's only £45 so not a bad price for a dress at all. You can get this dress here.

Of course, Evans have loads more dresses on their site - and they aren't all red! Why not head over and see what catches your eye?

Have you bought any dresses for the up and coming party season yet?
